Complimentary Hair Consultation for New Clients — Book Your Visit

How To Prepare For Your Hair Consultation

By hello@tomybsalon.com 8 min read

A great hair consultation is the foundation of every successful salon experience. Whether you’re looking for a new hair color, a major cut, extensions, or a restorative treatment, the time you invest in your consultation directly determines how happy you’ll be with your results. At Tomy B. Salon in Williston Park, Long Island, every new client receives a complimentary consultation — and we’ve put together this guide to help you get the most out of it.

Why the Hair Consultation Matters

The consultation isn’t just a formality — it’s where we assess your hair’s current condition, understand your goals, identify any limitations or concerns, and build a realistic plan to get you where you want to be. Skipping or rushing this step is one of the most common reasons clients end up disappointed after a salon visit. We take ours seriously, and we ask that you do too.

What to Do Before Your Appointment

1. Know What You Want — Or Be Open to Guidance

You don’t need to arrive with a fully formed vision, but it helps to have at least a general direction. Are you looking to go lighter or darker? Do you want a dramatic change or something more subtle? Do you want to address damage, thinning, or texture issues? If you’re genuinely open to our recommendations, that’s wonderful — experienced colorists and stylists love creative freedom. But if you have a specific look in mind, the more clearly you can communicate it, the better.

2. Bring Reference Photos

This is the single most useful thing you can do before a consultation. Photos eliminate the guesswork that comes from describing color or style in words — everyone’s definition of “warm blonde” or “soft layers” is different. When choosing reference photos, look for:

  • Someone with a similar hair texture, thickness, and natural base color to yours
  • Images that show the specific element you love — the tone, the dimension, the cut shape, the overall style
  • Multiple photos if needed — one for color inspiration, one for cut, one for texture

Don’t worry if you can’t find the perfect image. Bring a few options and let us help you identify exactly what you’re drawn to. That’s part of what the consultation is for.

3. Set Realistic Expectations

Celebrity photos are inspiring, but they often come with extensions, professional lighting, and styling that can take hours to recreate. A good stylist will always be honest with you about what’s achievable in one visit versus what requires a phased approach over multiple appointments. Major color corrections, for example, can take several sessions to complete safely without compromising your hair’s health. We’d rather tell you the truth upfront than promise something we can’t deliver.

4. Come with Your Hair in Its Natural State

If possible, come to your consultation with your hair down and in its natural, unstyled state. This gives us the most accurate picture of your hair’s natural texture, curl pattern, density, and current color. If you have a curl pattern or wave we’d never see because you always blow it straight, we need to know about that before we recommend a cut or color.

What to Tell Us During the Consultation

Your Full Color History

Be completely honest about every chemical service your hair has had — even if it was years ago, even if it was a box color from the drugstore. This includes highlights, all-over color, toners, bleach, and any at-home coloring products. Different chemicals interact with each other in unpredictable ways, and knowing your full history allows us to formulate safely and set accurate expectations for how your hair will respond.

Chemical Treatments

Tell us about any chemical straightening or smoothing treatments you’ve had, including keratin treatments, Brazilian blowouts, Japanese straightening, relaxers, or perms. Highlighting or coloring over certain chemical treatments can cause severe breakage if the colorist isn’t aware of them. This is non-negotiable information — we need to know.

Medications

Many medications significantly affect hair texture, porosity, and how it responds to color. Blood pressure medications, thyroid medications, hormonal treatments, chemotherapy drugs, and certain painkillers can all change the way hair processes chemical services. We’re not asking for your medical history — we just need to know if you’re on anything that might affect how your hair behaves so we can adjust our approach accordingly.

Your Hair Goals and Lifestyle

Tell us how much time you realistically spend on your hair each morning. Are you someone who air-dries and goes, or do you blow-dry and style every day? Do you swim regularly? Do you work out often? Your lifestyle should directly inform the cut and color we recommend — the best look is one you can actually maintain.

Past Experiences

If you’ve had a bad experience at another salon — a color that turned orange, a cut that felt too short, a treatment that caused damage — tell us. We’re not judging. We want to know what went wrong so we can make sure it doesn’t happen here.

What We Assess During the Consultation

While you’re sharing your goals and history, Tomy is conducting his own assessment of your hair. This includes:

  • Hair health — checking for damage, breakage, split ends, and elasticity
  • Porosity — how your hair absorbs and retains moisture and color
  • Density and thickness — how much hair you have and how each strand feels
  • Natural base color — the underlying pigment that will affect how color develops
  • Scalp health — checking for any sensitivity, dryness, or conditions that might affect treatment choices
  • Current treatments in the hair — assessing what chemicals may already be present

All of this informs our recommendation. We’ll never push you toward a service that isn’t right for your hair’s current condition — even if it’s what you came in asking for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the consultation really free?

Yes — completely. Every new client at Tomy B. Salon receives a complimentary consultation with no obligation to book a service. We believe that a thorough conversation before any service is essential, not optional.

How long does a consultation take?

Most consultations take 15–30 minutes depending on the complexity of what you’re looking to achieve. If you’re coming in for a major color correction or a full treatment plan, allow a little more time so we can be thorough.

Can I book a consultation without committing to a service that day?

Absolutely. You’re welcome to come in purely to talk through your options, get our honest assessment of your hair, and decide from there. Many clients appreciate having that conversation before committing to a service — especially for major color changes or corrective work.

What should I bring to my consultation?

Bring photos of looks you love, a list of any chemical treatments or medications if you think they might be relevant, and an open mind. Everything else we’ll take care of.

Do I need a consultation before every appointment?

No — once we’ve established your hair history and goals, returning clients don’t need a full consultation each visit. A brief check-in at the start of each appointment is usually all it takes to make sure we’re aligned before we begin.
